Member Spotlight - Sargie

Miko’s mascot is a lively German Shepherd named Sergeant. His given name is a little “stuffy”, so we just call him Sarge or Sargie. Sargie embodies the Miko corporate personality in several ways. He is always ready for the next “big thing”, and he enters into his next excursion with the same enthusiasm which all of our Miko employees display. Sargie stays faithful to the task during the execution of every activity, and, while doing so, he is watchful to protect his fellow staff members.

Sargie is a rescued canine. He faced hunger and thirst during the extreme heat and drought in summer months during which he spent searching for his master who had moved from the neighborhood without him. Consequently, he is a loving companion and appreciates every gesture of kindness. Miko staff are well-known for treating fellow employees with respect and kindness both while they are in the home office and while working off-site. Sargie fits right in!

Just as every Miko staff has been employed elsewhere prior to coming into the Miko fold, Sargie’s route to Miko is a circuitous one. It began in the summer of 2010 during the last Reading First National Conference in Anaheim, CA. Many Miko staff were in Anaheim, and Nancy Helphinstine was one of them. While there, Nancy received a call from one of her sons who said that a local veterinarian had a rescued dog that needed a home. She thought that the “fine, friendly German Shepherd that was thin and in need of a home” would be adopted by a family by the time she returned from Anaheim, but she promised her son that she would call the vet when she got home - four days later. Needless to say, Sargie was adopted by Nancy’s family soon after the Reading First National Conference concluded, and he came home to two other rescued pets: a Rotty-Lab named Ditto, and a 20 year-old rescued black calico cat named Fatty (no wonder her attitude is a little testy with a name like that).

Miko supports a non-discriminatory corporate ethic, and hence, we also have a wonderful mixture of individuals with special talents who work together for the corporate good. And we bring a terrific variety of skills to every task in every contract. Now, that’s worth barking about!
