FEATURED SESSIONS: EARLY LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT STRAND

As noted in several previous issues, the Department will convene the 2010 Reading Institute in Anaheim, California on July 19-21. And, the Department of Education is joining with the Department of Health and Human Services to offer an Early Learning and Development Strand at the Institute.

"This Administration is committed to effective literacy instruction developed through comprehensive, standards-based reform,” stated Secretary Duncan in his letter of invitation. “The Reading Institute demonstrates that commitment. I encourage you to join your fellow educators from around the country and to share this information with others who may be interested.” There is no registration fee for the Institute or its specific strands. Some U.S. Department of Education grants permit use of federal funds for professional development and/or other training activities. You may wish to consider, in consultation with appropriate Department program staff, whether you may used such funds to support your participation in the 2010 Reading Institute. However, for those unable to attend, seven of the early learning strand’s sessions will be streamed online:

Please join the webinar on the 2010 State of Pre-K Yearbook released by NIEER, which profiles state-funded pre-kindergarten programs in the United States. Trends in pre-K and implications for transition to kindergarten (benefits and challenges) will be discussed, followed by a question and answer segment. This event is intended to provide a foundation for the session under the Early Learning Strand: Birth to 3 Years in Anaheim entitled, "Improving Language and Literacy Development: How Research Can Drive System Wide Best Practice at the School District and Classroom Levels Birth to Grade 3."
